Sylvester Joseph "Silver" Stoffel was born June 5, 1929, in Garden Plain, KS to Albert and Frances (Mannebach) Stoffel. He was the youngest of six children, two brothers and three sisters, all deceased. He entered into eternal rest on Friday, November 7, 2014, at his home in Overland Park with his family present.
He entered the Air Force in 1947 and was honorably discharged in 1952. He was stationed in Greenland and served as a firefighter.
On July 10, 1952, he married Barbara Cox at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Mulvane, KS. They had two children, Curtis Joseph and Sylvia Joyce. To their great sorrow, their son Curtis passed away in 1969.
Silver worked for 33 years at Rounds and Porter Lumber Co. in Wichita, retiring in 1991. The couple moved to McPherson in 1971 where they attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Silver belonged to the American Legion Post #24 and was a life member. He was post commander for two years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
The family moved to Overland Park, KS in 2012, where they attended Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Silver loved his family very much. He was a hunter, fisherman, and enjoyed camping and boating. The couple also enjoyed traveling. He enjoyed these hobbies with his family many years after his retirement.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara, daughter, Sylvia Joyce Collins, son-in- law, Gregg Collins, granddaughter, Darla Morrow, step-grandsons, Christopher and Sam Collins, great- granddaughters, Gabriella Morrow and Alicia Morrow, and a great-step-grandson, Brandon Collins. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. He also leaves behind a beloved pet Shih Tzu, Noel.
The family wishes to thank everyone for the friendship, kindness, and the love given to Sylvester.
A visitation will take place from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at Stockham Family Funeral Home in McPherson, with the family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Rosary will begin at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, Nov. 12, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 525 E. Main St., Mulvane, KS 67110. Inurnment with Military Honors will be in the Mulvane Cemetery, Mulvane.
