Richard J. “Rick” Copeland died at home on July 8, 2018, after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was 57 years old.
Rick was born on July 28, 1960, in McPherson, KS, the son of Gene and Betty Copeland. He attended McPherson schools up until his junior year of high school, completing his education at St. John’s Military School in Salina.
After graduation, Rick held a number of jobs in retail and light industry. Most recently, he was the proprietor of Rick’s Repair, a computer-repair shop on Main Street. He tinkered with engines and electronics outside of work, and loved nothing more than the “wind therapy” he received riding his motorcycle in rural Kansas. Rick will be remembered for his sense of humor and free spirit.
He is survived by his father, Gene Copeland of McPherson, KS; brother, Ron (Nancy) Copeland of Fort Worth, TX; and sisters, Karan Rumple of Wichita, KS, and Beth (Chuck) DeCarbo of Brightwaters, NY; and sister-in-law, Alane Brickey of Hoover, AL. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Copeland, and brother, Larry Brickey.
The family would like to thank his caregivers, Jennifer Giesel, Amanda Engel, Darcy Wann, and Kindred Hospice for their unflagging aid.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, July 13, 2018, at McPherson Cemetery followed by a Celebration of Life from 10:30 AM until noon at the McPherson Museum.
