Lois Gertrude Lackey Hayes, 100, of McPherson, passed peacefully into eternal life Friday, January 20, 2012, at The Cedars in McPherson. She was a homemaker and served as the Secretary for the McPherson Church of the Brethren and of the Brethren Church District Office.
She was born December 1, 1911, in Vale, Oregon, the second daughter of Clinton Milo and Agnes May (Law) Lackey. Lois graduated from high school in Fruitland, Idaho and attended McPherson College, where she also served as Secretary to the College President. She had been a McPherson resident since 1942, having lived in Ellsworth and Chapman.
On December 29, 1935, in Fruitland, she married Harrison Guy Hayes, of Genesco, KS. Lois was a staunch supporter of Guy's work with the McPherson Kiwanis Club as well as his other community volunteering. She also participated in many women's clubs in McPherson. Together they were active members of the McPherson Church of the Brethren for over seventy years. They traveled extensively in Europe, Australia and New Zealand and all 50 United States.
Lois and Guy celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary before his death March 26, 2006. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clint and Agnes; husband Guy; a son, Dr. Larry Hayes; two brothers, Harold and Donald Lackey; and a sister, Wanda Lackey.
December 1, 2011, her 100th Birthday was celebrated with an Ice Cream Sundae Party at The Cedars. 100+ family and friends gathered to wish her well and share the fellowship. Guests enjoyed a 100-year-timeline and many photos of Lois' long life. That occasion was documented by an article in The Senior News of The Sentinel, December 16, 2011.
Survivors include a daughter, Gail Roe (Nick) of Houston, TX; a sister, Floy LaScala of Santa Monica, CA; seven grandchildren, Mark Hayes, Evergreen, CO, Michelle Harrison (Tim), Conifer, CO, Michael Hayes, Littleton, CO, Cecile Boston (Mike), San Jose, CA, Amanda Whitstone (Nick), San Jose, CA, Nathaniel Roe and Christopher Roe, both of Houston, TX; eight great-grandchildren, Dru Harrison, Highland, IN, Erika Harrison, Greeley, CO, Micaela and Madelin Hayes, Kansas City, KS, Jack and Max Boston and Will and Joe Whitstone, all of San Jose, CA. She is also remembered by many nieces, nephews and their families.
The family wishes to thank the staff of The Cedars (especially the nurses and aides), Hospice Care of Kansas and Dr. Peter DeWitt for their care. Longtime friends and family brightened her days right to the end.
The funeral service will be at 10:30 am, Monday, January 30, 2012 at the McPherson Church of the Brethren. Burial will be at 1:30 pm at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery in Lyons, KS. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, Sunday, January 29, at Stockham Family Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Memorial donations may be given to the McPherson Church of the Brethren or The Cedars in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home.
