John Flohr

John R. Flohr, 85, of Lindsborg, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2013, at his home in Lindsborg. He was retired from the NCRA Refinery after 32 years, working as a gauger.

He was born on May 19, 1928, in Freemount, Kansas, the son of Julius M. and Helen C. (Carlson) Flohr. He attended Freemount Grade School and graduated in 1947 from Marquette High School. On July 14, 1960, John was united in marriage to Jeanette E. Sjogren in Lindsborg, Kansas. She preceded him in death on January 30, 2007.

John served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was a member of the Lindsborg American Legion. He also was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Lindsborg and Charter Member of the Lindsborg Lions Club. He served on the Lindsborg City Council and Lindsborg Tree Board.

Sports were an important part of John's life. During high school, he played basketball and football and while in the Navy, he played baseball, earning the nickname, "Fire Ball Flohr". He was an avid KU sports fan and enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals play baseball. When his daughter, Melinda, was in high school and college, he not only looked forward to watching her play sports, especially tennis, but enjoyed her concerts. Later on, he played pool with his friends at the Lindsborg Senior Center and golf with Melinda.

Survivors include: his daughter, Melinda Flohr (Marcia Schulmeister), of Emporia, KS; a step-son, James Krig of San Antonio, TX; a sister, Marjorie Hunter of McKinney, TX; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Gene, Ralph, James, and Marvin Flohr, and a step-son, David Krig.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at Messiah Lutheran Church, Lindsborg, with Rev. Dean Apel officiating. Inurnment with Military Honors will precede the service at 10:00 AM on Wednesday at the Freemount Cemetery.
