Joe D. Bryant, 92, of Galva, KS, peacefully passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at Lindsborg Community Hospital, Lindsborg, KS. Joe recently moved to assisted living in Lindsborg and then on to Bethany Home and was grateful for the care given to him while there.
Joe was born on June 2, 1931, in Davidson County, NC, the son of Shuford Steed and Lula Mae (Hughes) Bryant. He was educated in the Thomasville schools. Joe joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and served for four years. He served in Korea as a cryptographer. Later, Mr. Bryant joined the U.S. Navy Seabees and served as a power lineman/electrician at Camp Hoover, Vietnam.
Joe was united in marriage to Gerlene Louise Brozek on June 5, 1955, at the First Methodist Church in Salina. They lived in Salina, KS for a time where Mr. Bryant worked for Kansas Power and Light Co. as a power lineman. Later, they moved back to North Carolina where Joe worked for Duke Energy Corp. as a power lineman. He retired in July of 1991.
Surviving are his loving wife of 68 years, Gerlene of the home; several nieces and nephews in Kansas and North Carolina; and dear friends, Kris and Cheri′ Hanschu and their family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings, R.G. Bryant, J.C. Bryant, Hazel Bryant Porter, Mozelle Bryant Beck, Harold Bryant, and Peggy Smithey.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina, KS.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be given to Bethany Home (Lindsborg) or King’s Hiway Baptist Church (McPherson) in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.
