Jeanette Lee Stump, 104, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at The Cedars in McPherson.
She was born January 13, 1918, in Gibbon, Oklahoma (Grant County) to Jerry Simpson and Dorothy Pearl (Aves) Slaughter. Jeanette graduated from high school in Perryton, Texas, attended Oklahoma Baptist University, and received a BA degree in Education from McPherson College in 1959.
She married Harley H. Stump on Aug. 23, 1937, at Thomas, Oklahoma. Harley preceded her in death on Dec. 2,1996.
Jeanette, Harley, and their two sons, Harl and Nelson, moved to McPherson in August, 1957. Harley was professor of English and Literature at McPherson College. In 1959, Jeanette started teaching fifth grade at Wickersham School. The remaining years were spent at Park and Washington Schools, retiring in 1983.
Harley was a Church of the Brethren minister in his earlier years, and Jeanette fulfilled the many duties of a minister’s wife and was the church organist. Together, they served churches in Texas, Oklahoma, California, and Kansas. Jeanette has been a resident of The Cedars since 2008.
Jeanette was an active member of several state and local teacher’s organizations and was a life member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was also an active member of the Church of the Brethren since 1937. One of her more memorable life experiences was when she and Harley went around the world as part of Campus Afloat in 1969.
In her spare time, Jeanette enjoyed doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles and playing cards with friends.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Jeanette always enjoyed hearing the activities of her family who always felt her warm and supportive personality or approach. She had many friends from co-workers and former students.
Survivors include: a son, Dr. Harl Stump (LaVena) of Hays, Kansas; two grandsons, Stephen Stump (Lisa) of St. Louis, Missouri and Phillip Stump (Ellen) of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and six great-grandchildren, Curtis Stump, Brent Stump, Kevin Stump, Mark Stump, Elizabeth Stump, and Sarah Stump.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; a son, Nelson E. Stump; a brother, Dean Slaughter; and a sister, Jerrille Slaughter.
Rev. Chris Whitacre will share some comforting words at 11:00 AM, Monday, May 9, 2022, at Stockham Family Funeral Home with visitation/viewing following until 1:00 PM on Monday. A private burial will be in the Ochiltree County Cemetery near Perryton, Texas.
