Henry Adair Cooney, 86, of McPherson passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2013, at McPherson Hospital. Henry worked for Pyle Construction for 12 years and in 1960, he started working as a lab technician for NCRA Refinery until he retired at the age of 62.
He was born on August 26, 1927, in Oxford, KS, the son of Ben Adair and Anna May (Calvert) Cooney. Henry graduated from Central College, McPherson. On September 7, 1947, Henry was united in marriage to Ruth L. Walker in McPherson, KS.
Henry served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post #24.
He was a member of the McPherson Free Methodist Church where he spent many years on various boards and committees. He volunteered many years working with Craftsmen for Christ where he and Ruth enjoyed traveling and working with the team all over the United States. He also volunteered endless hours working on the Central Christian College Campus.
Survivors include: wife, Ruth of the home; four daughters, Linda Pharr (Tom) of Plano, TX, Debra Wagoner (Alan) of McPherson, KS, Kim Johnson of McPherson, KS, and Jill Kennedy (Mark) of Lewisville, TX; brother, Bill Cooney (Selma) of Napa, CA; 10 grandchildren, Lindsay Arnott Macedo, Lance Arnott, Sarah Wagoner Hendricks, Andrew Wagoner, Mandy Hockett, Cody Johnson, Jason Pecho, Jensen Yancey, Haleigh Yancey, and Reid Yancey; 8 great-grandchildren, Paloma Macedo, Aikmin Arnott, Rachael Hendricks, Joel Hendricks, Renae Hendricks, Katie Wagoner, Albert Wagoner, and Cameron Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Nina Coburn, and son-in-law, Michael Yancey.
The funeral service will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at the McPherson Free Methodist Church with Rev. Deborah Somerville and Rev. Tom Griffith officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at the McPherson Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Stockham Family Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
