Florence Elaine Sammer, 85, of McPherson, died Monday, January 29, 2007, at The Cedars, McPherson. She was born October 30, 1921, in McPherson, the daughter of Arthur and Alice (Michael) Post. She was one of four children born to this union. Mildred was her sister and Louis and Warren were her brothers. McPherson was always the family home. Florence graduated from McPherson High School in 1939.
On April 27, 1941, Florence was united in marriage to Andrew W. Sammer, and they established their home in McPherson. This union was blessed with three sons, Denny, Dick, and Dana. She was a member of the First Baptist Church all her life, a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. Florence had worked at the Alliance Insurance Company, and as a McPherson City Hostess and retired as an Underwriter at the Alliance Life Ins. Co. She spent many volunteer hours for Memorial Hospital and at the Save N' Share store.
Florence was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was especially fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always looked forward to the times they spent together. Florence loved to crochet, embroider tea towels for the hospital, and read. She and Andy spent many hours together canning the things that were grown in the garden. She enjoyed singing in the choir at church and visiting with friends in the nursing homes and at The Cedars.
Surviving members of her family include: her husband, Andy of the home; three sons, Denny and his wife, Gay, of San Antonio, TX, Dick and his wife, Trudy, of Nashville, TN, and Dana and his wife, Susanne, of McPherson, KS; eight grandchildren, Curtis and Chris Sammer, Susan Catalano, Kelly Barrett and Ben Sammer, and Jill, Nicholas, and Jordan Sammer; nine great-grandchildren, Ellis and Ian Sammer, Henry, Emma, and Sam Catalano, Jackson and Bridget Barrett, and Cade and Landree Wedel; and many other relatives and friends.
The memorial service will be 11:00 AM Friday, February 2, 2007, at the First Baptist Church, McPherson with Rev. Les Cantrell officiating. Burial will take place prior to the memorial service at 9:30 AM, Friday at McPherson Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 3:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at Stockham Family Funeral Home with the family present from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.
