Ernest Dwain Peterson, the son of Edward C. And Hannah (Nelson) Peterson, was born December 12, 1913, in McPherson, Kansas. He was one of two sons born to this union. He lived with his family on a farm in McPherson County. He attended Prairie Queen grade school.
On December 4, 1938, Ernest was united in marriage to Ethel Johnson in Roxbury, Kansas, and they enjoyed 68 years together. They lived their entire married life in McPherson County. Ethel preceded him in death on December 9, 2006.
Ernest worked for and retired from KP&L after 44 years. He enjoyed the outdoors. In his early years, he farmed part-time. He later enjoyed gardening. After retirement, he spent a lot of time mowing lawns for people. He also enjoyed his dogs and coon hunting.
He was a quiet and gentle man. He loved children, and they somehow always found their way onto his lap.
He was a member of the New Gottland Lutheran Church.
Ernest entered peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, April 4, 2008, at The Cedars in McPherson. He was ninety-four.
Surviving members of his family include: sons, Dwayne R. Peterson and his wife, Georgianna, of McPherson and Ronald D. Peterson of Gibsonville, NC; four grandchildren, Rhonda Dealey and her husband, Rev. Bob, of Lockport, IL, Paula Brown and her husband, Tom, of Hillsborough, NC, Melinda Cochran and her husband, Michael, of Yukon, OK, and Brian Peterson and his wife, Heather, of Keller, TX. He had seven great-grandchildren, Robbie Dealey, Theodore Brown, Cole, Bryton and Anna Cochran, and Grace and Andrew Peterson, and three step-great-grandchildren, Karin Dealey, Kristin Lowe and her husband, Michael, Katie Dealey, and one step-great-great-grandchild, Elena Lowe, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his brother, Alvin, and his daughter-in-law, Bonnie Peterson.
The funeral service will be at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at the New Gottland Lutheran Church with Rev. Harry Grinstad and Rev. Dr. Bob Dealey officiating. Burial will precede the service at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, at the New Gottland Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Monday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at Stockham Family Funeral Home with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
