Edith A. Young, 96, of McPherson, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at The Cedars in McPherson. She was a homemaker and school teacher, having taught in a one-room school near Conway and at schools in Little River and Marquette. In later years, she was a para-professional and worked with special needs children in the schools at McPherson USD 418.
She was born February 10, 1921 in Conway, KS, the daughter of Clyde and Ethel (McDonald) Little. Edith’s mother died when she was quite young and that led to Edith being adopted and raised by her aunt and uncle, Lee and Mable Hulse.
Edith graduated from McPherson High School in 1939 and then attended McPherson College for two years.
On May 23, 1945, she was united in marriage to Verne W. Young at the Monitor Church of the Brethren near Conway. They made their home in McPherson since 1950, moving from Little River. Verne preceded Edith in death on November 22, 2007.
Edith was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a former 4-H Leader.
Survivors include: two daughters, Christy Dowdy (Dale) of Rockingham, VA and Carrie Ann Richter (Tom) of Edmond, OK; a son, Ron Young (Kellie) of Milton, MA; nine grandchildren, Mark Dowdy, Micah Dowdy, Stephen Dowdy, Scott Richter (Megan), Ryan Richter, Christopher Young, Ciara Young, Eamonn Young, and Eowyn Young; and a great-granddaughter, Bennett Richter.
She was preceded in death by her biological and adoptive parents, her husband, and a half-sister, Marjorie Ann Little.
The memorial service will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, January 22, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. H. Dick Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Burial at McPherson Cemetery will precede the memorial service and will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday at Stockham Family Funeral Home.
