Doris Irene Tyler, 86, of McPherson, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 31, 2012, at The Cedars, McPherson. She was an elementary teacher and counselor, teaching at schools in Alta Vista, IA, Nora Springs, IA, Waterloo, IA, McPherson, KS, and Lyons, KS.
Doris was born May 17, 1926, in Kent, IL, the daughter of Roy E. and Ethel (Fike) Stern. On June 6, 1948, she was united in marriage to Miles A. Tyler in Fredericksburg, IA. He preceded her in death on May 18, 2008.
She graduated from Fredericksburg, IA High School in 1944, received a B.A. from McPherson College in 1960, and received a M.A. from University of Northern Iowa in 1968. She was a member of the McPherson Church of the Brethren, National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association. Cosmos Club, and Bible Study Fellowship.
Survivors include: three sons, David A. Tyler and wife, Carol, of Lincoln, NE, Charles S. Tyler and wife, Celeste, of Cairo, GA, and Rick Tyler and wife, Karlene, of McPherson, KS; daughter, Trudy A. Essmann and husband, Charles, of Waterloo, IA; seven brothers, Russell Stern, Donald Stern, Irven Stern, Alvin Stern, Roy L. Stern, Robert Stern, and James Stern; 11 grandchildren, Troy Essmann, Christina Paulsen, Kelly Tyler Porter, Nicole Tyler, Emily Tyler, Katy Tyler Wilkins, Christopher Tyler, Keegan Tyler, Alexander Tyler, Austin Tyler, and Natalie Tyler; three great-grandchildren, Abigail Paulsen, Elizabeth Paulsen, and Kayden Wilkins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, two brothers, Galen Stern and Daniel Stern, and three sisters, Beulah Francione, Margaret Hansel, and Lois Ilaoa.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, September 4, at the McPherson Church of the Brethren with Rev. Chris Whitacre officiating. Inurnment will be at the Garden of Memories in Waterloo, IA at a later date. There will be no visitation.
