Doris Jane Arnold passed away January 11, 2023, at the MTM Boarding Care Home in McPherson at the age of 99, just shy of her 100th birthday. She was born in Hillsboro, Kansas on April 3, 1923, to John F. and Estella Frieda (Entz) Klassen. Doris was the granddaughter of Dr. J.J. Entz, a medical doctor of Hillsboro (1897-1932). Doris was baptized during her 8th grade year on May 2, 1938, in the First Mennonite Church. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1941 and graduated from Venus Beauty Academy that same year. She got her cosmetology license and started Klassen Beauty Shop in Hillsboro, KS.
Doris was married to Robert A. Arnold on September 18, 1943, and moved to McPherson, Kansas. There, she had two sons, Larry Gene Arnold who resides in Mesquite, Nevada and Dr. Robert John Arnold in McPherson, Kansas. In 1950, Doris and Bob moved back to Hillsboro where she started Arnold Beauty Shop. She owned the beauty shop until she and Bob began going to Sun City West, Arizona for the winter months. They wintered there for 20 years. They moved to Parkside Homes Apartments on August 7, 2000. She moved to Parkside Full care in 2020. In May of 2021, she moved to MTM Boarding Care Home in McPherson, KS during the COVID pandemic to be closer to family.
She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church/Hillsboro United Methodist Church for over 70 years and an associate member of the Sun City West Shepherd of the Hills Methodist Church.
Doris enjoyed playing bridge weekly with friends upon her retirement. She loved golfing, traveling with Bob to foreign countries and each state except Alaska. K-State football games were a favorite time: tailgating with the family. Doris was involved as part owner of Hillsboro State Bank. Other organizations she participated in were American Legion Auxiliary, United Methodist Women, McPherson V.F.W. Auxiliary, and the Hillsboro Golf Association.
Survivors include: two sons, Larry Arnold and wife, Sally, of Mesquite, Nevada and son, Dr. Robert J. Arnold and wife, Margie, of McPherson, Kansas; two granddaughters, Betsy Arnold Marr and husband, Charles, of Alexandria, Virginia and Maggie Lee (Arnold) Scena and husband, Chris, of Littleton, Colorado; two grandsons, Robert “Rob” Arnold and wife, Jennifer, of Coronado, California and Kelly Brett Arnold of Wichita, Kansas; step-grandson, Brad Ty Perske of Seattle, Washington; and seven great-grandchildren, Theodore, Nicholas, & Ian Scena of Littleton, Colorado and Robert John “Trey”, Savannah, Hudson, and Summer Arnold of Coronado, California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Allen Klassen.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 25, at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church with Pastor Margaret Johnson officiating.
