Darrell Glen Bacon was born on July 8, 1954, to Elvin and Vivian (Dickerson) Bacon. The Bacon family was overjoyed to welcome a baby boy who would carry on the family name. Darrell grew up in McPherson, Kansas, attending Roosevelt Elementary School, Park School, and McPherson Junior High, before graduating with the McPherson High School Class of 1972.
After high school, Darrell pursued his passion for mechanics at Wichita Automotive School. He began his career at Marshall-Turner Chrysler-Plymouth, where he worked from 1973 to 1977. In 1977, Darrell joined Midwest Industries, taking on roles in the Polishing Department, running a mill, and eventually serving as the Milling Department Supervisor. He retired in 2020 after an impressive 43 years of dedicated service.
Darrell’s life changed during the summer before his senior year when he took a job as a cook at Kansas Broasted Chicken. There, in the walk-in freezer, he met Stephanie, a waitress who would become the love of his life. They married on July 6, 1974, and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2024. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. They were blessed with two sons, Mark and Adam, of whom Darrell was immensely proud, especially for the remarkable men they had become.
Darrell cherished his family above all else, finding endless joy in his grandchildren, his many friends, and his Thursday Morning Men’s Bible Study. He delighted in annual jeep trips with his jeeping buddies and adored his granddog, Mya, and grandcats, Finley and Shadow. Darrell shared special moments restoring a 1937 Plymouth truck with his dad and Adam, and his passion for woodworking led to the creation of beautiful furniture and custom crown molding for his home. A devoted Dr. Pepper enthusiast, he spent years curating memorabilia to decorate the family’s basement.
Darrell had a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures in life, from enjoying ice cream and J.D.’s hamburgers with burnt onion rings to spending time with loved ones.
In February 2022, Darrell was diagnosed with cancer, which he faced with courage and resilience. In May 2024, he rededicated his life to the Lord and was baptized, finding profound peace in his faith. Following his decision to discontinue chemotherapy, Darrell looked forward to his heavenly home.
Darrell is survived by his devoted wife, Stephanie; his son Mark Bacon and wife Jackie, along with their children Cade, Ellie, and Owen of Lincoln, Nebraska; his son Adam Bacon of McPherson, Kansas; his sisters Jean Stevenson (J.R.) of Newton, Kansas, and Diane Parrish (Wayne) of McPherson, Kansas; his aunt and uncle Elsie and John Sheriff of North Newton, Kansas; sisters-in-law Kris Swanson (Dale) of McPherson, Kansas, and Pam Mitchell of Norman, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elvin Bacon, and his wife Donna; his mother, Vivian Childers; and his parents-in-law, Floyd and Diana Oborg.
Darrell’s kindness, sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
