Charlotte D. “Charlie” Levens, 96, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024, in Salina, KS. She was born August 26, 1928, in rural Galva, KS, the daughter of Willis F. and Ida Marie (Christensen) Scott. She attended Grasshopper Country School and graduated from Galva High School in 1946. Upon graduation, she worked at the McPherson Woolworth from 1947 to 1955.
Charlotte was united in marriage to U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Joseph D. Levens on September 4, 1955, in McPherson, KS. Joe was from Alabama and stationed at Schilling Air Force Base. They were living in Salina when he died on May 8, 1963. She moved with their two children, Joseph, Jr. and Rita, to McPherson where she worked at Sid Bacon Motors for two years before spending 26 years at the McPherson Sentinel. She retired in 1993 as Circulation Manager.
Charlotte was a member of the First Baptist Church in McPherson, acting as the historian of the Y.E.S. Sunday School Class. She was also formerly a member of the V.F.W. Post #2715 Ladies Auxiliary. She spent much of her retirement working on the history of the Grasshopper Country School as well as the genealogy of the Scott and Christensen families.
Survivors include son Joe Levens and wife Diane of Pittsburg, KS, daughter Rita Cooper and husband Mike Foster of Salina, KS, and two nieces, Jolene Hilty and Jazell Bersuch of McPherson, KS.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother & sister-in-law Aldon “Scottie” and Retha Scott, son-in-law Jim Cooper, three nieces and two nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday, December 13, 2024, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, December 14, at Stockham Family Funeral Home with burial following at Crestwood Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the First Baptist Church, McPherson, McPherson Opera House, Cat House McPherson, or Gentiva Hospice, all in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.
