Bernice E. Hoda

Bernice E. Hoda, 91, of McPherson, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at The Cedars, McPherson.

She was born on April 19, 1923, in Lindsborg, KS, the daughter of Carl A. and Mary Evalyn “Eva” (Miller) Danielson. On June 23, 1945, Bernice was united in marriage to Sam P. Hoda in McPherson, Kansas. They were married for 61 years before Sam’s passing on July 31, 2006.

After graduating from McPherson High School, Bernice started her career with Farmers Alliance in May of 1941. She served as Secretary to the President and as Assistant Secretary and Assistant Secretary-Treasurer during her career. She became First Vice-President in 1975 and served in that capacity until 1985, when she was promoted to Corporate Secretary. Bernice was elected to the Board of Directors in 1975 with the distinction of being the first woman to serve on the Board.

Following retirement in 1989, Bernice continued to serve as a member of the Board of Directors for the Alliance Insurance Companies.

Bernice was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include: nieces & nephews, Mark Kumle of Great Bend, KS, Monette DePew of Pratt, KS, Mary Sjogren of Lindsborg, KS, Michael Kumle of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Tracy Nelson of Lindsborg, KS; great-nephew, Eric DePew; great-nieces, Stefanie Hudson and Jessica Kumle; and beloved dog, Ashley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Arlene Kumle, and her dog, Samantha.

The memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Tim Leaf officiating. Private interment will precede the memorial service at McPherson Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.
