Amis Baylie Seals, 84, of McPherson, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2013, at Angel Arms in McPherson.
He was born September 4, 1928 in Mankato, Kansas, the son of Charles and Hazel (Baylie) Seals. He graduated from Mankato High School, Brown Mackie Business College, and the National School of Meat Cutting in Toledo, Ohio. Amis also attended Kansas State University.
He had been a resident of McPherson since 1972, moving from Mankato. Amis retired from Farmer's Alliance Insurance Company where he had worked as Regional Claims Manager. Prior to being called to military service, Amis worked as a meat cutter and process manager for several food stores.
Amis served in the U.S. Army as a machine gunner during the Korean War. During that time, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, and a Silver Star for gallantry in action. He was a Life Member of V.F.W. Post #2715 and longtime member of American Legion Post #24. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
On December 30, 1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Freeda Lucille Hanson in Mankato. She preceded him in death on November 22, 2005. Amis was also preceded in death by a sister, Carol Clegg and husband, Bryant, his parents, and numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Survivors include: a son, Mike Seals and wife, Susan of Odessa, MO; a daughter, Pattie Stephens and husband, Vince, of Hutchinson, KS; four grandchildren, Amy Burgett, Jenny Burgett, Logan Seals, and Sara Corder; four great-grandchildren, Jaden, Ethan, Andrew, and Kaylyn; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Frances and Rex Weaverling of Mankato, KS; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 10:00 AM, Thursday, April 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church in McPherson. Graveside service (with Military Honors) will be at 2:00 PM Thursday at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday at Stockham Family Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
